Un beau film avec de vraies valeurs comme sait si bien le faire Ken Loach. Des réfugiés syriens arrivent dans le nord de l'Angleterre en 2016. Cette arrivée va attiser la haine de quelques habitants. Le patron du pub va s'émouvoir de cette situation et se prendre d'amitié pour l'une des réfugiés.
TJ Ballantyne est le propriétaire de The Old Oak, un pub qui est menacé de fermeture après l'arrivée de réfugiés syriens placés dans le village sans aucun préavis. Bientôt, TJ rencontre une jeune Syrienne, Yara, qui possède un appareil photo. Une amitié naît entre eux. Peinture sociale le plus de Kench, qui se situe dans une ville sinistrée dans la fermeture d’une mine, et où les réfugiés syriens ont du mal à trouver leur place .
