Dans un futur proche, la technologie a fait des relations amoureuses une science : un test informatisé peut déterminer la probabilité d'un partenariat réussi entre deux individus. Zoe (Léa Seydoux) et Cole (Ewan McGregor) travaillent dans le centre de recherche responsable du développement de cette technologie. Zoe et Cole sont amis mais Zoe est amoureuse de lui et est déçue lorsqu'elle passe le test de compatibilité et découvre qu'ils ont une compatibilité de 0%. Quand elle dit cette information à Cole, il lui dit gentiment qu'elle est une synthétique. Histoire à l'eau de rose sans action et trop long.
