En tombant sur *Great Expectations* à la librairie Massolit de Cracovie, j’ai craqué : ce titre un peu trop universel pour ne pas être mystérieux, m’a immédiatement interpellé. (David Copperfield attendait sagement à côté, mais ce sera pour une prochaine fois !) On est d’abord embarqué par cette naïveté enfantine du style, qui dépeint avec humour et légèreté la cruauté des adultes et de la société. Puis, ce roman d’initiation se transforme, au fil des pages, en thriller social, dressant une condamnation subtile du système judiciaire de classe et du spectacle sordide des châtiments publics. Mais ce qui m’a vraiment marqué, c’est tout simplement ce que le titre promet : une histoire sur notre rapport toxique aux attentes. Ces scénarios que l’on s’invente, qui nous aveuglent, nous éloignent de ceux qui nous veulent du bien… et finissent par créer notre propre malheur. Et me voilà, après Zola, réconcilié avec Dickens.
