The Secret History

This book was quite an adventure. It’s a classic of dark academia and the first book of the genre that I read. The vibes were there, but my appreciation of the book was quite heterogeneous. Indeed, the first half was really pleasant and I enjoyed every bit of it as I was reading often on the train during October. But as we reach Bunny’s death - already revealed in the prologue - we’re halfway through the book. And then, what ? The tension isn’t the same, and everything is so slow and always the same. I’ll say it. I started to get bored. And I started to read less and less taking more time to get to the end which didn’t help me appreciate the book again. But then, towards the final quarter of the book things start to move again, and a new tension arises foreshadowing the epic end to come. I started to appreciate my reading again at this moment. And I got emotional at the Epilogue. I didn’t want to leave the heroes of the story behind. I still don’t want to forget them. And their ends are tragic even to those who remain alive, and it makes me feel some type of way. But murderers couldn’t know a happy ending, could they ? Anyway, globally this book has been a thrilling experience, which perfectly got me into the mood of Autumn and its spooky vibes even though I finished it in the beginning of winter. (Because of a part I judged a bit boring) Donna Tartt’s writing is brilliant and elegant. I loved it.
