Summary

The Musée de La Poste, located in Paris, is a unique museum dedicated to the postal history and philately of France. Opened in 1946, it was initially housed in the Choiseul-Praslin hôtel in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, before moving to a larger building near the Montparnasse station in the 15th arrondissement in 1973. The museum was closed for redevelopment from 2014 to 2019. The museum's genesis can be traced back to the late 19th century when the idea was first proposed by philatelist Arthur Maury. However, it wasn't until 1936 that the project was relaunched by Eugène Vaillé, a civil servant at the French posts' library. Despite the economic crisis of the 1930s and World War II, the museum was finally inaugurated in 1946. The museum's collections include objects related to correspondence, mail transport, the work of postmen, and philatelic and marcophilic items. A special room showcases the 3,500 postage stamps of France in chronological and topical order. Temporary exhibitions are also held regularly. The museum also houses a philatelic library and a philatelic counter that serves as a post office. Whether you're a philatelist, a history enthusiast, or just a curious visitor, the Musée de La Poste offers a fascinating insight into the evolution of postal services in France.
