The Palais Galliera, also known as the Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris, is a renowned museum of fashion and fashion history located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, France. The museum is open daily except Mondays and public holidays when exhibitions are on, with an admission fee that varies depending on the exhibition. The museum reopened on 28 September 2013 after a major renovation and is part of the public institution Paris Musées. The museum was built on land owned by the Duke of Galliera and his wife, Maria Brignole Sale De Ferrari, the Duchesse de Galliera. Construction began in 1879, and the museum was completed in February 1894. The building, designed by architect Léon Ginain, is a beautiful example of Italian Renaissance style, with mosaic floors and domes by Giandomenico Facchina. Since 1977, the City of Paris has operated the Palais Galliera as a permanent museum devoted to fashion. It displays exhibits of French fashion design and costume from the eighteenth century to the present day. The museum's holdings contain about 70,000 items, including costumes, undergarments, accessories, and graphic arts and photography. The museum is closed in between exhibitions.
