The Museum of Grenoble, located in the Isère region of France, is a renowned municipal museum of Fine Arts and antiquities. Founded in 1798, it is considered the first museum of modern art in France, thanks to the efforts of curator Andry-Farcy during the interwar period. The museum is situated on the left bank of the Isère River and is known for its extensive collections of ancient, modern, and contemporary art. The museum's history is rich, with its establishment predating other French provincial museums. It was initially housed in the former bishopric and later relocated to the Central School, now the Stendhall School. Over the years, the museum's collection grew, necessitating a new building, which was inaugurated in 1870. In 1994, a new building was inaugurated, tripling the exhibition space. The museum also features a sculpture garden in the Albert Michallon park, a wooded area surrounding the old city wall. The museum's collection spans from the 13th to the 21st century, offering a comprehensive view of western history. It also houses a significant collection of African statues and artifacts.
