Summary
Tate Modern, located in London, is one of the world's largest museums of modern and contemporary art. It's part of the Tate group, which includes Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, and Tate St Ives. The museum is housed in the former Bankside Power Station in the Bankside area of the London Borough of Southwark. The nearest railway and London Underground station is Blackfriars, just 0.5 km away. The museum's collection, which is free to access, includes international modern and contemporary art dating from 1900 to the present day. Major temporary exhibitions, however, require a purchased ticket. The museum also features a large performance space, a cinema, educational facilities, shops, and dining options. Tate Modern's history is rooted in the Bankside Power Station, which was built in two stages between 1947 and 1963 and closed in 1981. The power station was saved from demolition and in 1994, it was announced that it would be the home for the new Tate Modern. The conversion, which retained much of the original structure, was completed in 2000. The museum has since undergone expansions, including the conversion of the power station's original oil tanks into display spaces and the addition of a ten-storey tower, now known as the Blavatnik Building. Tate Modern has become a major cultural destination, attracting millions of visitors each year.
