The Palazzo Pitti, also known as the Pitti Palace, is a grand Renaissance palace located in Florence, Italy. Situated on the south side of the River Arno, it's a short distance from the Ponte Vecchio. The palace was originally built in 1458 as the town residence of Luca Pitti, a Florentine banker. In 1549, it was bought by the Medici family and became the primary residence of the ruling families of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. It later served briefly as the principal royal palace of the newly united Italy. In 1919, the palace and its contents were donated to the Italian people by King Victor Emmanuel III.
