The Metropolitan Museum of Art, colloquially known as "the Met", is the largest art museum in the Americas, located in New York City. Founded in 1870, its mission is to bring art and art education to the American people. The Met's permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among 17 curatorial departments. These include works of art from classical antiquity, ancient Egypt, paintings and sculptures from nearly all the European Old Masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The museum also maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, Byzantine, and Islamic art. The main building, located on Manhattan's Upper East Side, is one of the world's largest art museums. The Met also has a much smaller second location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, which contains an extensive collection of art, architecture, and artifacts from medieval Europe. In 2022, it welcomed over 3 million visitors, making it the third most visited U.S museum. The Met is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
