Summary

The Van Gogh Museum, located in Amsterdam South's Museum Square, is a Dutch art museum dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries. It houses the world's largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings, drawings, and letters. The museum, which opened on 2 June 1973, was designed by Gerrit Rietveld and Kisho Kurokawa. The museum's collection originated from the unsold works of Van Gogh after his death in 1890, which were inherited by his brother Theo, and later by Theo's widow, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger. The collection was eventually transferred to the state-initiated Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1962. The museum has experienced art thefts, but most of the stolen works have been recovered. It consists of two buildings, the Rietveld building, which houses the permanent collection, and the Kurokawa wing, used for major temporary exhibitions. In addition to Van Gogh's works, the museum also features notable artworks by his contemporaries in the Impressionist and post-Impressionist movements. In 2019, the museum launched the Meet Vincent Van Gogh Experience, a technology-driven "immersive exhibition" on Van Gogh's life and works, which has toured globally. The Van Gogh Museum is the most-visited museum in the Netherlands and one of the most-visited art museums in the world. It offers a unique and comprehensive insight into the life and work of one of the most famous artists in history.
