Summary
The Palace of Versailles, located in Versailles, France, is a grand former royal residence built by King Louis XIV. Just 19 kilometers west of Paris, this magnificent palace is a testament to the absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime. The palace is renowned for its classic French architecture, expansive landscaped gardens, and opulent interior, including the Hall of Mirrors. The palace's history dates back to 1623 when Louis XIII built a hunting lodge on the site. His son, Louis XIV, expanded the château into a palace, making it the seat of his court and government in 1682. The palace was the de facto capital of France until 1789 when the royal family returned to Paris during the French Revolution. The palace was largely abandoned during the French Revolution and was later used as a summer residence by Napoleon I. It was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979 and is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world, drawing millions of visitors each year. The Palace of Versailles is a symbol of the absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime and is a must-visit for those interested in French history, art, and culture.
