Summary
La Sucrière is a renowned contemporary art venue located at 48 Quai Rambaud, in the Confluence quarter of Lyon's 2nd arrondissement, on the banks of the Saône. This historic building, originally built in 1930, served as a sugar warehouse before being expanded in 1960 and abandoned in 1990. In 2003, architect William Vassal transformed the building into a unique and complex architectural space for contemporary art exhibitions. Spanning 9,000 m² across three floors, La Sucrière became the main venue for the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Lyon from 2007. Despite a controversy in 2008 over an exhibition of flayed bodies, the venue continues to attract a large number of visitors, with some exhibitions drawing up to 4,000 visitors per week. Whether you're an art enthusiast or a history buff, La Sucrière offers a unique blend of history and contemporary art that is sure to captivate your interest.
