Summary
The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (Mucem) is a national museum in Marseille, France, dedicated to showcasing the historical and cultural interplay within the Mediterranean basin. Inaugurated on 7 June 2013, when Marseille was the European Capital of Culture, it has since welcomed millions of visitors, contributing to the region's appeal. The museum is situated on reclaimed land at the entrance to the harbour, adjacent to the 17th-century Fort Saint-Jean and the former port terminal, the J4. The two sites are connected by a 130m footbridge. The museum's striking design, a cube surrounded by a latticework shell of fibre-reinforced concrete, is the work of architects Rudy Ricciotti and Roland Carta. Inside, exhibits span two levels, with a 400-seat underground auditorium, a bookshop, and a rooftop restaurant offering panoramic views of Marseille. The museum's collection takes an interdisciplinary approach to society, charting the ages up to modern times. In 2015, it was awarded the Council of Europe Museum Prize.
