Summary
The Rijksmuseum, located in Amsterdam, is the national museum of the Netherlands dedicated to Dutch arts and history. Established in 1798 in The Hague, it moved to Amsterdam in 1808 and has been housed in its current main building, designed by Pierre Cuypers, since 1885. The museum underwent a ten-year renovation and reopened in 2013. It is the most visited museum in the Netherlands and the largest art museum in the country, boasting a collection of 1 million objects from the years 1200–2000. Around 8,000 of these, including masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer, are on display. The museum also features a small Asian collection housed in the Asian pavilion. The Rijksmuseum's collection was built over 200 years and includes not only paintings but also sculptures, historical artifacts, and an extensive collection of 19th-century photographs. The museum is located at the Museum Square, close to other major museums like the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. It's a must-visit for art and history enthusiasts visiting Amsterdam.
