The museum was founded in 1898 by Henri Cernuschi in his former mansion and is considered the second-oldest Asian art museum in France and the fifth-oldest Chinese art museum in Europe. The museum underwent significant renovations from 2001 to 2005 and again in 2019-2020, expanding its exhibition space to 3,200 m2. In 2013, it became part of the public institution Paris Musées, along with 13 other city museums. The Musée Cernuschi's collection has grown from nearly 5,000 to about 15,000 objects, with a focus on artefacts from China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Highlights include the large Buddha of Meguro, a Japanese bronze from the 18th century, and a fine collection of archaic bronze pieces.
