This video game is such a unique surreal experience. First off, it’s simply a good visual novel. The characters are all super interesting (especially Sayori) and they feel very lively and engaging to interact with. The dialogue flows well and is nice to read, lots of stuff hinting and foreshadowing the darker aspects of the game. When it gets to Sayori hanging herself, the game completely crumbles apart and I loved experiencing all the meta stuff around DDLC. The character files getting deleted, the secret poems, it’s all super awesome and makes the player feel integrated in the story. I felt like a detective finding clues in the files, it’s neat. The horror aspects are top notch as well, the weird unnerving glitching towards the end of the 2nd act is perfectly unsettling. The slight out of tune song, a picture of Sayori hanging in the back of the classroom, weird zooming in or Monika accidentally appearing in front of the text box, all these little things add up to create this uncomfortable feeling that something is DEFINITELY wrong in this visual novel. The end when Monika addresses the player instead of the MC was the best way to finish off the story. Monika doesn’t care about anyone, to her they’re just lines of code, she wants so bad to talk to someone real, and when she finally does, her whole facade breaks and she addresses me. That type of breaking the 4th wall is really cool and especially for me it’s unnerving when she mentioned my username and the fact that I am playing on Steam. To me, this narrative is very impactful BECAUSE of its medium. This cannot be a movie or show, the way the story is told relies heavily on the idea that this is a video game, and the audience is probably expecting an average ordinary lovey dovey visual novel instead of this narrative involving a self aware AI and psychological horror. This game has impacted me in such a deep profound way, because I think it taught me how far you can creatively take your stories. I can’t imagine DDLC getting a sequel or anything, but it sucks to see that we won’t be able to see a continuation of this world in any way in the future. It’s a one and done story, and I think that’s ok. 9/10, legendary status
