Frankenstein, réalisé par Guillermo del Toro, est un long-métrage qui m’a toujours intrigué, notamment pour sa mise en scène singulière et son univers cinématographique atypique. De mon côté, je suis souvent impressionné par la qualité de son travail, même si sa filmographie comporte aussi quelques petites déceptions au fil des années. Pour ce film en particulier, il faut le reconnaître : c’est une grande œuvre, à voir au moins une fois dans sa vie. Du côté de l’acting, la prestation est solide sur toute la ligne, aussi bien pour les rôles principaux que pour les personnages secondaires, tous parfaitement investis. Visuellement, la photographie est superbe. On ressent pleinement la patte Del Toro, avec cette ambiance à la fois humaine et bestiale, empreinte de mélancolie et de monstruosité, qui fonctionne à merveille et renforce l’émotion du récit. L’esthétique est soignée, cohérente, et sert pleinement le propos. Mon seul véritable reproche concerne le rythme, que je trouve parfois un peu long. Certaines scènes m’ont semblé superflues et auraient pu être écourtées sans nuire à l’ensemble. Malgré cela, j’ai passé un très bon moment. Le roman est respecté et sublimé, avec une vraie vision d’auteur. Un film ambitieux, puissant et marquant, qui confirme le talent de son réalisateur malgré quelques longueurs.
