Reviews and Comments
1 reviewsOne of the best Pixar movies to date, very well made and entertaining. I didn’t expect much from this movie, I thought it would be just your average run of the mill animated kids movie. But this film is really great, funny, and I liked the message. I was scared that it would follow Avatar’s plot way too closely. I thought it would end with the message that we should appreciate nature and given the choice, the main character will side with the animals on taking down the evil humans. But no, it actually has an uplifting message. Jerry, who was introduced as the evil antagonistic mayor, is actually somewhat kind and makes mistakes. It isn’t black and white, where the main character Mabel is good and Jerry is bad, but they’re both flawed individuals who have differing goals. The end really solidified this movie being great for me, because Mabel never destroys or defeats Jerry, they work together and build a better future with each others interests. And that’s WAY more impactful then the mediocre “Animals good and Humans bad” plot. They really nailed the realistic cartoon art style. It took all the great factors that made Turning Red’s art style good, while also fixing its flaws. A big issue I had with Turning Red was how… similar everyone looked. They all had the round potatoy face, the bean shaped mouth. It all just looked so mediocre, but this movie really stepped this up a notch. Every human looks unique while also having consistent art style, and the animals look so cute and lifelike. I really liked how, when someone understands the animals, they have expressive lifelike eyes, but when the animals can’t be understood, they have small beady little black eyes. It’s a cool little visual technique to distinguish when people understand the animals and it really helped the story be cohesive and understandable. The visuals were great, the animation was top notch, the film was actually really funny for a Disney film. Sure, some jokes were just alright and didn’t hit hard, but a few stood out and were really funny. Like, Mabel killing the Insect Queen and the awkward silence as she rubs the insect juices on the wall was so funny. Or the end monologue from Insect Jerry where he talks about being human. James Franco was great as that role and it brought so much life and chaos to the Insect King and Insect Jerry. Also the flying Shark scene was so unexpected but surprisingly fun and tense scene to watch. Seeing the shark talk nicely to Mabel to get out of her way before her pupils dilate and she flys away was funny as it was horrifying I really enjoyed it, the theater experience was the best it could be, and I could see pretty much anyone enjoying this movie, 8/10 I actually don’t really have any complaints.
