Un film passionnant qui rend compte de la situation précaire de la population obligée pour survivre de voler ou de marchander. Dès les premières images on voit une longue file attendre le jerrican d’eau offert par Sadam, lui même responsable de cette pénurie en raison de sa politique d’assèchement des marais ou de la construction de certains barrages.On suit avec intérêt les déambulations de Lamia une petite fille qui doit confectionner un gâteau pour fêter l’anniversaire de Sadam.Entre marchandages et menus travaux, Lamia, aidée de son ami entend mener sa tâche à bien. Certaines images sont de toute beauté : le reflet d’un visage, peut-être celui de l’amour dans l’eau, les couleurs d’un pan de mosquée en contre plongée ou encore une mise en abyme avec un miroir reflétant les personnages.
Synopsis
It’s “draw day” across Iraq, when schools select students for the honour of bringing items to their mandatory local celebrations of President Saddam Hussein’s birthday. Nine-year-old Lamia lives in the historic marshes with her spirited grandmother, Bibi. Before school, Bibi teaches Lamia clever tricks to avoid being chosen for the president’s cake. However, when Musa, the authoritative teacher, calls Lamia’s name for the most challenging task—the birthday cake—she has no choice but to accept. Refusing could mean imprisonment or even death.
