Le sujet est brillamment abordé, sans voyeurisme, et sans fioriture autour du sujet central : le "procès" et les appels à la justice, avec une mise en lumière des codes en vigueur... Ce n'est pas la vie des esclaves dans les plantations qui sont au coeur du film... Ce qui explique que le réalisateur (et le romancier???) passe assez brièvement dessus... La violence est montrée de façon habile. L'acteur est remarquable (j'ai moins apprécié la prestation d'A. Girardot... je ne sais pas si cette romance apporte une réelle plue-value d'autant que je n'ai pas bien compris comment elle se termine). En tout cas, le film m'a donné envie de lire le roman.
