Ligeti usage d'œuvres musicales au lieu d'une narration traditionnelle, et pour le rôle secondaire qu'occupent les dialogues dans l'intrigue. Sa bande-son mémorable est conçue par Kubrick lui-même, afin d'épouser au mieux les scènes du film. Ainsi, le réalisateur use de la suite de valses du Beau Danube bleu de Johann Strauss pour rappeler le mouvement des danseurs de valse lors du mouvement de rotation des satellites, ou encore du poème symphonique de Richard Strauss, Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra, afin d'aborder le concept philosophique nietzschéen du Surhomme, mentionné dans le poème philosophique du même nom.
Synopsis
