This is the type of movie that gets me so inspired. The way Richard just saw the potential in his girls. I’ve never seen someone believe this hard in their kids. But what really strikes me is the fact that he not only did everything to make the dream come true but he did that while allowing his girls to be girls. I suppose this decision was based on his experience as a black child. When you are a black child, especially during the 50’s and the 60’s, you don’t get to be a child. You are exposed, at a pretty young age, to so much suffering. First thing you learn is you can’t go there, you can do that and you feel like something is wrong with you. You’re not accepted, you’re not wanted, you’re a reject of the society. Imagine having to build yourself around that. Everything is pretty much life threatening and very serious when all you supposed to do is have fun. That’s why he always made it fun for his girls. “ just have fun “ he said multiple times. His decision to pull Venus out of the juniors was so inspiring because he just wanted them to be educated not just play. He knew for them to be excellent they had to be educated. But also allowing them to be kids and grow gave them time. Early success means most of the kids are thrown into a vicious industry that can make them forget they are kids. There’s so much pressure, so much ugliness, they’re exposed to drugs and many other things. That reminds me of so many child actors that grew up and told their stories. Zendaya recently told in an interview that she wishes she went to school. I’m also thinking about Joe Jackson who literally bullied, abused, traumatized his children into a successful career but what’s left of that ? We’ve all seen Michael Jackson and his tendency to always be around children just to be able to live a part of his childhood through the kids he brought to Neverland. Yes Joe Jackson had great ambitions for his children and he strongly believed they would become successful (and he was absolutely right) but he forgot about them being young and needing to be just that, young and silly. Richard Williams allowed his girls to be just girls and to have fun and that’s so beautiful. He taught them to be humble and was never mean or violent, always encouraging, always uplifting them, telling them he loves them. He helps them be confident but never cocky. I absolutely loved seeing that and I’m definitely taking parenting lessons from him.

Spect.
