Mabel, femme au foyer, mère de trois enfants et épouse dévouée, se sent terriblement seule. Elle abuse de l'alcool et traverse des crises de démence, à la suite desquelles elle est internée en psychiatrie pendant six mois. À sa sortie, toute la famille l'accueille chaleureusement, mais elle paraît toujours fragile.
