Del Toro gained more than 45 pounds (18 kg) in nine weeks before filming began, eating 16 donuts a day Hunter Thompson (who wrote the book used for the movie) is often credited as the creator of Gonzo journalism, a style of writing that blurs distinctions between fiction and nonfiction.
