Dans les décors somptueux des chutes du Niagara on suit un film qui commence par un simple adultère avant de finir en tragédie. Joseph Cotten fait une composition remarquable, tout en densité sombre. La magnifique Jean Peters n'est pas en reste, elle trouve probablement l'un de ses meilleurs rôles, tout en sensualité. Le suspense est vite éventé, mais la tension reste palpable.
