Il est question de tenter de réécrire l'histoire – la Grande et l'intime –, de réparer des blessures de vie. Le constat d'une violence américaine indéracinable, dans un road movie qui joue sur la nostalgie d'une époque, et doit autant à sa mise en scène élégante qu'à la performance de Kevin Costner.
